Current research interests include: British cinema; the Biblical epic; Hollywood musical; Hollywood romantic comedy; British and American TV comedy; New Zealand cinema; British cinema, particularly 1940-60; British stars; gender representations; female film criticism; gender and genre; French cinema from the 1930s to the present; stardom; cinema audiences and theories of spectatorship; German cinema of any period; gender theory and film; Spanish and Latin American cinemas, particularly the Spanish thriller; gender representations; national identities; and the use of landscape, space and place; the vampire on film; new and contemporary Latin American and Spanish cinema, particularly Buñuel, Almodóvar; Brazilian cinema; feminist and queer film theory; psychoanalysis and cinema; surrealism and melodrama.
