Course aims: to develop a broad historical understanding of statutory educational frameworks in Wales and the UK; to develop an understanding of key factors in the cultural and political context of education; to develop a broad understanding of bilingualism and language acquisition; to develop a broad knowledge of psychology and education; to develop a working knowledge of aspects of school related to social awareness, moral values, spirituality and pastoral care; to develop an understanding of the operation of the frameworks for formal learning; to develop an understanding of the breadth and function of educational provision beyond the school system; to develop study skills related to literacy; numeracy; information communication technology and investigation; to draw on a wide range of intellectual resources, theoretical perspectives and academic disciplines to illuminate understanding of the issues of social inclusion and special education and the contexts in which these take place; to provide students with a broad and balanced knowledge and understanding of the principal features of social inclusion and special education within organisational, national and international contexts; to encourage students to engage with fundamental questions concerning the aims and values of inclusive education and its relationship to society; to provide opportunities for students to appreciate the problematic nature of educational theory, policy and practice; to encourage the interrogation of educational processes in the contexts of social inclusion and special educational needs.
