The programme in theoretical physics provides a strong mathematical training and is intended for those who wish to explore quantitatively the profound concepts of modern physics; mathematical techniques help students to deal with new ideas that often seem counterintuitive, such as string theory, black holes, superconductors and chaos theory; while studying 1 of the most intellectually satisfying disciplines, students acquire transferable skills including numeracy, problem solving and an ability to reason clearly and communicate well; core physics topics include: mechanics, relativity, quantum mechanics, electromagnetism, atomic physics, thermal physics, waves and related phenomena, nuclear structure, particle physics, and condensed matter physics; mathematics modules include calculus, linear algebra, dynamical modelling, complex functions, field theory, mathematical biology, advanced game theory, modern particle physics, quantum mechanics, relativity and chaos theory; there is an advanced computer-modelling project in the 3rd year using Java, and a mathematical physics essay.
