PhD research is a central and exciting part of the Department of Media and Communication research culture. We offer a broad range of research skills that are tailored to the needs of the individual student who may be undertaking study in (but not limited to) communications studies, media studies, journalism studies, digital arts, cultural studies, or film studies. These include time and project management, writing and communication skills, research methodologies, methods and ethics. We also support interdisciplinary research that draws upon a variety of fields of expertise within the Humanities and Social Sciences cluster, including research into China Studies, International Relations, Linguistics, and Education. Our ongoing series of research seminars provides a forum for PhD students to share ideas and receive feedback from our team of experts in the field. As part of our programme of professional development, we offer PhD students the opportunity to shadow a member of staff for one semester in order to develop their teaching skills, as well as opportunities to provide teaching assistance. You will join an exciting and dynamic research community that facilitates leading-edge research opportunities. Our PhD programme is a strategic research collaboration between XJTLU and the University of Liverpool, based at XJTLU. Upon successful completion of your programme you will receive a PhD degree from the University of Liverpool, which is recognised by the UK’s Department of Education as well as China’s Ministry of Education. The normal length of full-time PhD programme is three years. At the end of three years’ full-time study, you can apply for an extension of one year to complete the writing of your dissertation. Part-time PhD degrees usually take four to seven years. As a registered full-time PhD student, you have the opportunity to apply for a research visit to the University of Liverpool for up to three months. Your accommodation and travel fees will be covered by XJTLU and the University of Liverpool. Full-time PhD students are funded to attend local and international conferences during their studies.
