Freshman-level discovery courses: 2 credits (1 half semester course) of Introduction to Engineering. These courses allow freshmen to experience cutting-edge engineering topics of interest to individual professors. 0 credits (1 course) freshman seminar which helps students to transition to college life and allows students to explore options (majors, minors, concentrations, study abroad, co-op) within the College of Engineering. Requirements that build the foundations for engineering principles: 20 credits (6 courses) focused on mathematics, two of which are courses taught within the ME department. 16 credits (4 courses) of basic science, including one natural science elective. 8 credits (2 courses) engineering computation and electric circuit theory. Required mechanical engineering topic courses: These courses cover the core areas underlying mechanical engineering including: statics and dynamics, fluids, thermodynamics, heat transfer, structures, material science, instrumentation and design. Advanced elective courses: These advanced elective courses allow students to pursue areas of particular interest to the student. These courses can be used to fulfill concentration requirements or some requirements for an engineering minor.

The university is located at the junction of Fenway-Kenmore, Allston, and Brookline neighborhoods. In the Fenway-Kenmore area are the Museum of Fine Arts, the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, and the nightlife of Landsdowne Street as well as Fenway Park, home of the famous Boston Red Sox baseball team. Allston has been Boston's largest bohemian neighborhood since the 1960s. Nicknamed "Allston Rock City", the neighborhood is home to many artists and musicians, as well as a variety of cafés, and many of Boston's small music halls.


The fourth’s largest U.S. University’s main campus is situated along the Charles River in Boston's Fenway-Kenmore and Allston neighborhoods, while the Boston University Medical Campus is in Boston's South End neighborhood.


As a result of its continual expansion, the Charles River campus contains an array of architecturally diverse buildings. The College of Arts and Sciences, Marsh Chapel, and the School of Theology buildings are the university's most recognizable and were built in the late-1930s and 1940s in collegiate gothic style. A sizable amount of the campus is traditional Boston brownstone has acquired almost every townhouse those areas offer. The buildings are primarily dormitories but many also serve as various institutes as well as department offices. The Mugar Memorial Library is the central academic library for the Charles River Campus. It also houses the Howard Gotlieb Archival Research Center, formerly called the Twentieth Century Archive, where documents belonging to thousands of eminent figures in literature, journalism, diplomacy, the arts, and other fields are housed.
