This is a broad-based course that allows increased specialisation in the final year; the course looks at the interaction of biological systems with the environment and focuses on the development of the skills necessary to apply biological concepts to the solution of practical problems; in years 1 and 2 students develop core knowledge and understanding in the areas of molecular biology, human biology, chemistry, laboratory and investigative techniques, ecology, and the legal and regulatory framework that governs the application of science; the final year allows the student to choose taught units from the thematic areas developed in the 1st and 2nd year and undertake a double weighted research project that offers the chance for a student to understand a topic in greater depth than is possible with the taught units; the course involves strong components of laboratory and fieldwork.
