Year 1: Major emphasis is placed on drawing draughtsmanship as basis communication foundation personal language; begin produce complex visual statements; heightening refining students own critical awareness; also encouraged, a wide range media traditional digital;students have opportunities to explore painting techniques and the translation of image into printmaking. Year 2: Level 2 introduces students to the wider experience of professional illustration practice and its inherent demands; at the core of this is an exploration of the relationship between words and images; students experience the problems and delights of sequential story telling and the exposition of complex ideas in single images; students are encouraged at all times to reflect on their personal practice and to understand the sources that drive and inform it; students can also explore the notion of illustration in less conventional circumstances; exploiting their abilities on different stages; option modules at level 2 include a work experience module; the chance to take part in an exchange with European students through the Socrates-Erasmus programme and the chance to study animation. Year 3: At this level students take responsibility for their own creative progress through a programme of student-led self-directed study; students are expected to demonstrate a high degree of professional and technical ability; and begin to exercise career and professional choices; the study concludes with business studies and freelance seminars led, where possible, by practising illustrators who advise students in the selection and presentation of a professional folio of work; students undertake a special study which entails researching; collecting and organising material for an extended illustrated essay.
