The programme focuses on the development of concepts to a mature engineering level, proving feasibility using modern computational methods; this is the current philosophy in the design field; the ability to design large multi-functional engineering systems or structures and components, made from different materials, under complex loading, is of fundamental importance; design problems of these types are particularly challenging and interesting and form a major area of study on the programme.
