Year 1: Contextual studies: ecology and design; design and meaning (psychology and semiotics) and studio practice; histories and theories; workshops: making, still image, basic electronics, typography and textiles; critique and question: notion of the 'self' as the subject of experience and action in the production and reception of design via studio practice, considering the creative subject; the process; the object; and the user/spectator; project. Year 2: Contextual studies: society and culture; ecology, culture and change; ethics; material culture and studio practice (students produce projects in response to design briefs) supported by technical studies; workshops: interaction design, CAD and rapid prototyping, moving image, advanced electronics, manufacturing processes and graphic communication, and methods and processes (courses that introduce, review and develop conceptual strategies, modes of representation and research processes used in designing); responsibilities that the activity of design carries for the designer, including the dilemmas that a contemporary designer must face in negotiating a changing social, cultural, ecological and political terrain; 1 term in a design-related professional placement. Year 3: self-initiated major project and contextual report.
