Stage 1: Introduces most of the essential areas of music study: Music history; musical theory analysis; harmony; counterpoint; a range of compositional skills; and performance; as well as the roles of music in contemporary culture. Stage 2: Students study world music and musical analysis as well as choosing from a range of optional modules; options in historical and cultural studies cover an unusually broad range of musics, including medieval chant to hip-hop, Renaissance culture to jazz and classical symphonies to gospel; practical options include performance and composition in a range of classical and/or popular genres, studio-based work, orchestration, arranging and free improvisation. Stage 3: Modules in music and cultural theory, music analysis and interpretation; major specialist study, assessed through a dissertation, composition, portfolio or recital; plus further optional modules in historical and cultural studies. Stage 4: Students return to Newcastle and spend at least 1/2 of their time working on 2 specialist studies in areas (assessed through a dissertation, composition, portfolio or recital); the rest of the time is spent studying music and cultural theory, as well as a selection of optional music modules.
