Students take a selection of taught modules (100 credits) and undertake a research project and dissertation (80 credits). Compulsory modules (70 credits) typically include: high speed and advanced craft; marine management technology; theory of plates and grillages; marine fluid dynamics; further design studies (small craft); research skills. Students also select optional modules (30 credits) from a list which may include: small craft powering; marine production technology; optimal marine design; structural response analysis; marine transport and economics; design and analysis of marine transport systems. The programme is also available with a Preliminary Year, which provides students with the necessary knowledge to study at Master’s level. Typically, students select one module (20 credits) from: marine engineering design; marine design; offshore design; small craft design. Students also take 70 credits of optional modules and complete a project and report (30 credits).
