Students will (i) take three option courses (ii) take two mandatory courses: (a) a core course, ‘Writers and the Reception’, which will explore the interpretation and reinterpretation of major thinkers and writers in their own and in succeeding generations; (b) a skills course, which will equip them for the practical challenges of research and to think conceptually and critically about texts and contexts at a level higher than that of undergraduate work. (iii) write a dissertation of 12000-14000 words. The other courses are taken in the autumn and spring terms. Work for the dissertation is done in the summer. Option Courses: A. English Literature: Literature and Politics 1500-1625; Milton and Marvell; The London Underground 1650-1750; Rebellion and Ridicule 1660-1745 C. European Culture and History: Montaigne; Conflict and Convivencia in Early Modern Spain; The Italian Book 1465-1600; The Body in Renaissance and Early Modern Culture; The Material Culture of Renaissance Italy
