Year 2: Indonesian language 2; cultural foundations of Indonesia; Indonesian literature: the generation of revolution; Jawi and the Malay manuscript tradition. Year 3: Year of study in Indonesia. Year 4: Indonesian language 4; Indonesia on screen; Jawi and the Malay manuscript tradition; Indonesian literature: writings in the age of the new order; traditional Malay literature: history politics and religion in texts and film. Chinese: Year 1: Core modules: Elementary modern Chinese language I; elementary modern Chinese language II; introduction to classical Chinese. Year 2: Core modules: (Compulsory year in Beijing); modern Chinese language and reading comprehension; readings in modern Chinese; sinological research project; basic classical and literary Chinese. Year 3: Modules include: Intermediate modern Chinese language I; intermediate modern Chinese language II; modern Chinese theatre and film; traditional Chinese language and literature I; elementary Cantonese. Year 4: Modules include: Advanced modern Chinese language; BA dissertation in Chinese studies; modern Chinese literature; traditional Chinese language and literature II; styles of modern Chinese literary language.
