The course gives students an understanding of the theory and practice of community work and is suited if they have experience in this sector; the course is of particular interest to people from diverse educational backgrounds who have engaged in community-based voluntary work; successful applicants are committed to issues of social justice, anti-discriminatory practice and empowerment of others.Year 1: Modules provide a theoretical and practical understanding of: social science for community context; social policy and practice; communication skills; introduction to youth and community work; anti-discriminatory practice; an introductory placement (180 hours semester B).Year 2: Students study: youth policy and practice; community policy and practice and management; these modules lay the foundations for a full-time, 12 week, advanced level placement between February and May.Year 3: Students choose 3 specialist modules to develop areas of particular interest; students also undertake an advanced research module to support a supervised action-research, practice relevant dissertation equating to 2 taught modules.
