The design and implementation of computer security strategies will be examined for their resilience against these attacks; students from this course are equipped with the skills to analyse and secure computer systems and networks; in addition they develop the ability to continuously update and enhance their knowledge and skills in this rapidly changing area. Core Themes What you study The taught component (PGDip) of the course has 4 subject themes: • Ethical Hacking: the tools and techniques used by hackers and the professional process involved in conducting an Ethical Hack or a Penetration Test. • Computer Security Issues: the underlying security problems within computer systems and specifically Internet systems. This includes risk management, social and legal issues, and identity management (how to ensure a user is who they say they are). • Networking Infrastructure: the design, monitoring, management and security of systems to enable the correct people to have the appropriate privileges within an effective and efficient networked computer system. There will be an opportunity for students who wish to sit the relevant CISCO examination in this area. • Forensic Computing: the aftermath of a successful unlawful hack. This involves examining the techniques of Forensic Computing and gathering evidence of an intruder within a computer system. The MSc stage culminates the study with an approved applied or research project for the final dissertation.
