Years 1 and 2: Core chemistry modules: chemical principles; organic stereochemistry and reactivity; co-ordination chemistry; thermodynamics and kinetics; organic functional groups; molecular spectroscopy; colloids and interfaces; kinetics and mechanism; bifunctional molecules; chemistry of rings; organometallic chemistry; students also study the basic principles of molecular biochemistry, cellular biology, and physiology necessary for an understanding of the biological action of medicines; the mechanisms of drug action and how they are transported around the body to the site of action are covered in depth; details of specific medicines involved in the central nervous system are also covered. Years 3 and 4: in addition to chemistry modules covering advanced organic, inorganic, analytical and practical chemistry, students study advanced medicinal topics; in the 4th year the primary activity is an extensive research project within a research laboratory in the department, which will be assessed as part of the degree; students also study a number of specialist topics including toxicology, and modern methods of drug discovery including combinatorial chemistry.
