Founded by the Vincentians in 1898, the university takes its name from the 17th-century French priest Saint Vincent de Paul. Today DePaul University is the largest Catholic university in the U.S. and is among the nation’s top 15 largest private universities. It has 4 campuses in and around Chicago, IL; its two main campuses are centrally located in the city’s Lincoln Park and Loop neighborhoods.
Of its more than 250 undergraduate majors and graduate programs, digital cinema, communications, and accounting are the most popular majors. Undergraduate education emphasizes the liberal arts and sciences as well as service learning through its nationally recognized community-based service learning programs.
DePaul students have the option to live in a multi-college community residence hall, known as University Center which also hosts students from Roosevelt University, Robert Morris University and Columbia College.
Although traditionally Catholic, DePaul’s student body is highly diverse, with more than 350 student organizations and 29 fraternities and sororities on campus. The university promotes diversity in academic and student life by welcoming both full-time and part-time students who vary in age, background, ethnicity, and religious affiliation.

U.S. News National University Rankings 2016 placed DePaul the 124th. Washington Monthly National Universities Rankings 2016 ranked it the 129th.
The most popular majors by the number of registered students are general studies, accounting, public relations, advertising, communications, business/marketing, liberal arts, psychology, social sciences, computer and information sciences.
DePaul emphasizes a primary focus on pedagogy and has been recognized for excellence in experiential and service-based learning. Since 2004, US News & World Report has recognized DePaul as one of the top schools in the nation for service learning in which community-based volunteer work is utilized as an instructional strategy.
