Ohio State University’s roots go back to 1870, when the Ohio General Assembly established the Ohio Agricultural and Mechanical College. In 1878 the college's name was changed to The Ohio State University. In that same year the first class of six men graduated, and in 1879, the university graduated its first woman. The college began with a focus on training students in various agricultural and mechanical disciplines but was developed into a comprehensive university. 

Today Ohio State University is a public research university with the third largest university campus in the United States. Along with its main campus in Columbus, Ohio State also operates a regional campus system with regional campuses in Lima, Mansfield, Marion, Newark, and Wooster.

The university is home to an extensive student life program, with over 1,000 student organizations; intercollegiate, club and recreational sports programs; student media organizations and publications, fraternities and sororities; and three active student governments. Athletes from Ohio State have won 100 Olympic medals.

In its 2016 edition, U.S. News & World Report ranked Ohio State as tied for the 16th-best public university in the United States, and tied for 52nd among all national universities of U.S.A.

Ohio State alumni include Nobel Prize winners, Pulitzer Prize recipients, Olympic Games gold medalists, and USA’s Medal of Honor recipients, ambassadors, as well as members of the Forbes 400 list of the world's wealthiest individuals. 

10 of the Ohio State graduate programs are are in nation’s top ten by U.S. News & World Report. Top 10 programs include part-time MBA program (business), supply chain/logistics (business), administration/supervision (education), counseling/personnel services (education), curriculum/instruction (education), elementary teacher education, secondary teacher education, vocational/ technical education, international politics, and social psychology (psychology).

College of Education and Human Ecology stands out of them as the best in Ohio and 16th nationally out of 278 graduate education programs.
